MGA-licensed Websites Boast Record Numbers of Players Registered in the First Half of 2022

According to a recently released report from the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), in the first half of 2022, the number of players on licensed sites in Malta reached an all-time high.

Maltese regulator reports that active player accounts of licensed operators reached 19.3 million, an increase of 8.7% compared to last year. The previous record (19 million accounts) was registered at the end of 2020.

The increase in the number of players is due to the creation of new game accounts — in the first half of 2022 their number was 8.9 million, which is also a record figure.

Players aged 18-24 now make up almost 25% of the total.

Type 1 licenses, which cover online casino games and other activities, reached an all-time high and accounted for 71.5% of total revenue. At the same time, online slots accounted for 57.1% of total revenue.

The share of income from type 2 licenses attributable to betting shops decreased to 21.3%.

Type 3 licenses for peer-to-peer gambling such as poker and betting exchanges have remained stable at 7.1% of total revenue.

Gross value added in the Maltese gaming sector reached €573 million in the first half of the year, representing 8.0% of the Maltese economy.

As of June 2022, the sector employed 10,861 people, up nearly 600 people from the same period a year earlier.

The number of online companies licensed in Malta reached a historic high of 346, including 199 licensed operators.
