FIFA Launches AI League, a New Football-themed Game

FIFA has launched an open beta for World Cup AI League, a mobile video game. This is the first title by the organization since it split from publisher EA Sports last year.

AI League is not a simulation in the style of the best-selling FIFA series but is instead a ‘four-on-four’ casual soccer game played between AI-controlled characters. Players act as coaches, setting tactics and training players, and intervening during specific moments within matches.

The game uses last year’s Qatar 2022 Fifa World Cup branding and is currently available for Android, the iOS version will be launched soon.

The mobile video game was developed by Altered State Machine, a Web3 AI company.

“The launch of our FIFA World Cup AI league is an exciting step towards our mission to lead casual gamers into the world of AI gaming in the Metaverse, and we are honored to be building the first Web3 game with FIFA,” said the Co-Founder of Altered State Machine, Aaron McDonald.

Last May FIFA ended a three-decade cooperation with EA Sports. The partnership had been both a powerful fan engagement tool and a lucrative source of revenue for FIFA for a seemingly minimal effort.

The FIFA series became a commercial juggernaut for EA Sports, which generated billions of dollars.

Among the main reasons for terminating collaboration are FIFA’s increased financial demands, as well as EA’s desire to stage more eSports tournaments and release non-fungible tokens (NFTs) based on the series. FIFA believed such exclusivity would prevent it from pursuing other digital opportunities that could yield yet more revenues.
