Ukraine: The Number of Players Applying for Self-exclusion from Gambling Soared in Early 2023

According to the Ukrainian Commission on the Regulation of Gambling and Lotteries (CRGL), in the first four months of 2023, the number of people who voluntarily decided to restrict themselves from gambling has dramatically increased.

The development of a self-exclusion registry has been a priority for CRGL since the introduction of a new regulation on responsible gambling in Ukraine in 2021.

The list size is small by the standards of digital self-exclusion schemes in other markets such as Gamstop in the UK and Cruks in the Netherlands; as of April 2023, there were 687 people on the list in Ukraine.

Although the absolute number of such self-excluded persons is small, their total number is growing rapidly. In 2021 and 2022, CRGL added 195 and 315 people to the roster. For comparison, in the first four months of 2023, 245 people were added to the list.

CRGL Chairman Ivan Rudy said: «Out of 687 entries currently in the register, 686 were entered on the basis of statements about self-limitation. People, who are aware of the risks of gaming addiction turned to CRGL voluntarily».

«Therefore, there is certainly a demand for a conscious attitude to the gambling industry, first of all from those who have already faced difficulties.»

CRGL stressed that there are 643 men and 44 women on the list. Many applications were received from relatives of the players. A total of 45 applications were received from mothers, 8 from fathers and 13 from wives.
