In Ukraine the Number of Illegal Gambling Sites Went Down: Regulator Shared the Results of Its Work

Ever since it started to regulate gambling in 2020, Ukraine has been trying to reduce the number of illegal gambling operators in the country. In cooperation with the law enforcement agencies, the Commission for the Regulation of Gambling and Lotteries (CRGL) was able to significantly reduce the number of sites offering gambling without the appropriate licence.

Once CRGL detects an unauthorised gambling operator, it then forwards the information to the Bureau of Economic Security, which in its turn coordinates with the National Centre for Operational-Technical Management of Telecommunication Networks to block the domain of the perpetrator.

Ivan Rudy, the Head of CRGL, said in his speech last week that cooperation with other government agencies is important to curb the growth of the illegal sector and effectively combat money laundering.

«Thanks to the effective work on the regulation of the gambling market, the industry has become a powerful sector of the economy and directs billions to the state budget.

«Together with the colleagues from State Financial Monitoring Service, Ministry of Finance, National Bank, Ministry of Justice, State Tax Service, ARMA and other state bodies, we will continue to use all available mechanisms to combat the illegal gambling business and ensure full financial security for the lawful and licenced gambling operators in Ukraine», — said Mr. Rudy.

In accordance with the legislation of Ukraine, any activity related to gambling must be licensed by the state. Unfortunately, over the years, illegal gambling sites have proliferated throughout the country, attracting players with their high payouts and lack of decent KYC procedures.

In 2020, Ukraine introduced the regulation of gambling and lotteries and formed a national regulatory body — CRGL. The country also has a ban on the operation of illegal casinos, and licences are issued only to those operators that meet the requirements set out in the text of the law on regulation of the industry.

Since the adoption of the law, CRGL has been actively working to resolve the issue of the presence of illegal casinos in the country. Commission employees conduct regular checks and block access to sites that operate without a licence.
